How Flux Theory Launched Five Washes Across Seven Channels

When Ranbir Kapoor launched Flux Theory in Mumbai on Sunday, 27 September 2026, the brand made choices most D2C launches avoid. It picked a commodity category, shower gel. It launched only five products. It put them on seven channels at once. And it built the launch around a film that brought back five of Kapoor's screen characters. This is a read of those choices as a go-to-market playbook. For the Shopify store itself, see our separate piece on the Flux Theory store.

ExactWhy did not build Flux Theory's store or advise on its launch. We are reading public launch coverage and the brand's own site as outsiders. Where we could not confirm a detail, we say so.

Why pick a commodity category and make it personal?

Shower gel is a product most people buy on habit and price. It is hard to win on novelty, and a new brand rarely has the distribution to win on scale. Flux Theory did not try to change what a shower gel does. It attached a personality to the moment.

Advay Jhunjhunwala, co-founder with Kapoor, put the category problem plainly in the Indian Retailer launch report: "The shower category has traditionally been led by function, familiarity and scale." The pitch is that the brand does not compete on function alone. In the Business Today coverage, Kapoor frames the same moment differently: "The shower is an everyday moment, but it can mark a shift in how you feel and what you are ready for next."

Our reading is that a commodity needs a reason to choose, and the reason here is a choice of personality rather than a claim of superiority. The campaign line carries the same idea. The film asks "Who do you want to be today?", which turns a bottle on a bathroom shelf into a daily decision. That is an easier idea to remember than a list of ingredients, though the ingredients still have to be right on the pack.

Why launch five products and not a wider range?

Flux Theory launched five body washes, each built around one personality, one fragrance and one skin benefit. Kapoor describes the logic in the Business Today piece: "We have built each product around a distinct personality, fragrance and skin benefit." The table below combines the descriptions from the launch coverage, with product names as listed on one marketplace where we could see them.

Personality Fragrance (per MediaInfoline) Skin benefit (per Business Today) Name on Tira Beauty listing
The Lover Sensual santal Glow The Lover Brightening Body Wash with Panthenol, Argan Oil, Vitamin E (250 ml)
The Rebel Spicy leather Exfoliation The Rebel Exfoliating Body Wash with 2% Salicylic Acid for Body Acne (250 ml)
The Dreamer Bergamot Hydration Not seen on the listing we checked
The Sport Sporty mint De-tan The Sport De-Tan Body Wash for Bright Moisturised Skin with 5% Niacinamide (250 ml)
The Sage Earthy oud Deep cleansing Not seen on the listing we checked

Five is a number a first-time buyer can hold in their head. It is also a number a film can hold in one frame. Each wash has a different skin job, so no two products compete for the same shopper, and the choice on the shelf maps to a concern the shopper already has. Someone with body acne looks at The Rebel. Someone who wants a brighter look goes to The Lover.

The trade-off is that a small range gives a brand few products to win search on. Flux Theory's answer is to give each product a benefit-led name, so each one can match a real search query. That choice is visible in the marketplace names above, which lead with the skin job before the personality.

Three launch numbers for Flux Theory: five body washes, seven sales channels and five screen characters
Three numbers from the launch coverage. Image: drawn by ExactWhy from the sources linked in this article.

Why launch on seven channels on the first day?

The brand listed its own website, Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Tira, Zepto and Instamart from launch. Storyboard18 and MediaInfoline both name the same six marketplaces and quick-commerce apps alongside the brand's site. A new body wash brand on day one is in the same places shoppers already buy body wash, and Zepto and Instamart put the product in the hands of people who want it within minutes.

The cost of that reach is operational. Seven channels mean seven price points, seven stock levels and seven sets of listing content to keep in step. A shopper who sees a different price on Amazon and on the brand's site will not blame the marketplace. We cover the marketplace side in our guide to selling on Shopify alongside Amazon and Flipkart, and the quick-commerce side in our piece on quick commerce inventory.

The coverage is also clear that this is not the end state. Indian Retailer reports that the brand plans an omnichannel presence across digital and physical retail as it grows. At launch, the physical side was a plan, not a shelf. A brand that launches everywhere online first and waits for offline is making a sensible order of work, but it does mean the first buyers are the ones already comfortable buying body care on a phone.

What did the campaign film do for the launch?

The launch film features five of Kapoor's best-known screen characters: Barfi, Bunny, Jordan, Ayan and Shiva. MediaInfoline describes the film as "larger-than-life" and gives each character a trait. Barfi is playful and warm, Bunny curious and adventurous, Jordan intense and passionate, Ayan romantic and emotionally deep, and Shiva confident and quietly strong. The coverage does not say which character is paired with which wash, so we will not guess at that mapping.

Kapoor's own framing ties the film to the brand idea: "I have always been drawn to the idea that there is more than one side to each of us." The characters are a shorthand for that idea. A viewer who knows Barfi or Shiva already has a reason to be curious about the brand before reading a single product name.

Borrowed recognition gets attention, though, and attention is not the same as a first order. The film works because each character stands for a version of a person, and the five washes stand for five versions of a shower. The product still has to answer the buyer's question on the page, and that is where the launch is won or lost. We have seen only the coverage of the film, not its full cut, so our read is limited to what the press describes.

What does the pricing tell us?

We could not read prices from fluxtheory.in. The product listing loads through scripts, and when we checked, the public shop page showed only an empty bag to our tools. Tira Beauty's listings did show prices on 26 October 2026, and these may include a running deal rather than the MRP. On that listing, The Sport is Rs 269, The Rebel is Rs 359 and The Lover is Rs 399, all at 250 ml. We did not find prices for The Sage or The Dreamer.

Treat those as one marketplace's prices on one day, not a full price list for the brand. They still show how the brand sits in the market. At these levels a body wash is an impulse purchase, so the decision is made quickly, often by someone who has never tried the brand. That is why the product name, the benefit and the delivery promise matter as much as the film. For a shopper comparing Rs 269 with Rs 399, the difference has to be explained in the first few seconds on the page.

What has happened since launch week?

Our searches on 26 October 2026 found no new body wash, no offline store opening and no new campaign announced after launch week. The most recent interview we found is from Esquire India, published on 5 October 2026. Kapoor says in it: "For now, we're really focused on the shower and on building something people genuinely enjoy and connect with." That is a sign of a brand narrowing focus after launch, not widening it.

The launch coverage does point to plans. Business Today reports the company intends to expand its product portfolio and retail footprint and to extend into other shower and personal-care categories. Those are statements of intent. We would not count them as launches until a product is on a shelf or a listing.

What can Indian D2C founders take from this?

Four lessons, drawn from the choices above. None of them depend on having a film star on the label.

  1. Give a commodity a reason to choose. Name the moment in the day the product serves, then the personality or benefit that makes the choice feel like yours.
  2. Keep the range small enough to explain in one frame. Five products is easy to show on a screen. Give each product a different skin or use job, so no two compete for the same buyer.
  3. Go to seven channels only when the operations can carry it. Price, stock and listing content have to match across every place a shopper can buy. If you cannot keep them aligned on day one, launch on fewer channels and add more when you can.
  4. Treat a famous face as the start of the sale. Attention brings people to the page. The product name, the price and the delivery date are what turn them into a first order.

The brand's own site is at fluxtheory.in. If you want the store side of the same launch, the first half of this article has the link.
