Shopify Jewellery Store in India, Setup Guide for 2026
Selling gold, silver or diamond jewellery on Shopify in India is not like selling T-shirts. Buyers want proof of purity before they pay, prices move with the metal rate, every order is high value, and hallmarking and consumer rules apply that most categories never face. This guide covers what the product pages need, how to handle changing metal rates, which payment and shipping choices fit high-value orders, and the compliance checks to finish before you launch, ideally before Dhanteras on 6 November 2026.
Hallmarking rules are from the Bureau of Indian Standards and the Press Information Bureau, the GST position is from the CBIC gems and jewellery FAQ, consumer obligations are from the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, and Shopify features are from Shopify Help. All checked on 8 October 2026. Rules change, so recheck before launch and confirm tax treatment with your CA.
What hallmarking rules apply to selling jewellery online?
If you sell gold jewellery, hallmarking is the first thing to sort out, because it decides what you are allowed to list. BIS runs mandatory hallmarking for gold jewellery and gold artefacts in the districts notified under the hallmarking order, and the list has grown in phases since June 2021. Check the current district list on the BIS hallmarking page for jewellers before you assume you are in or out.
The points that matter most for an online store:
- Three marks on every hallmarked gold piece. BIS lists them as the BIS Standard Mark, the purity in carat and fineness, and a six digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number.
- Registration. BIS says registration is mandatory for jewellers selling hallmarked precious metal articles, and it states no fee is charged for the registration.
- Exemptions. BIS lists exemptions including articles under 2 grams, articles meant for export, and jewellers with annual turnover up to Rs 40 lakh. Read the full list on the BIS page rather than relying on a summary.
- Silver is different. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs announced HUID based silver hallmarking on a voluntary basis from 1 September 2025, under the revised standard IS 2112:2025, with seven purity grades: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999.
Customers can check a HUID in the BIS Care app, which shows details such as the article type, purity, date of hallmarking and the hallmarking centre. That gives you an easy trust message for product pages: print the HUID and tell buyers how to verify it themselves.
What should every jewellery product page show?
Answer the questions a buyer would ask at a shop counter, before they have to ask. On every product we would show:
- Metal and purity. For gold, the carat and fineness as hallmarked. For silver, the purity grade. Make these filterable in your collections, not buried in the description.
- Weights. Gross weight, metal weight and stone weight listed separately, because buyers compare jewellery by weight.
- HUID. The six digit number for hallmarked pieces, with a line explaining that it can be checked in the BIS Care app.
- Stone details. For diamonds and gemstones, the details on the grading certificate if there is one, and a clear label if a stone is lab grown or synthetic.
- Price breakup. Metal value, making charges, stone value and GST shown separately. This is not only good practice, the E-Commerce Rules require inventory sellers to show the total price along with a breakup of charges and tax.
Store these details in product metafields rather than typing them into each description. Shopify Help describes metafields as a way to extend products with your own custom data, and themes that support dynamic sources can display them through the theme editor. That keeps the layout consistent across hundreds of products and makes the data easy to export later.
Variants need some planning. Shopify allows up to three options per product and up to 2,048 variants. Ring size, metal colour and purity can quickly use all three options, so decide early which choices are true variants and which are separate products. Our guide to the 2,048 variant limit covers how to structure larger catalogues.

How do you price jewellery when metal rates change daily?
Shopify does not pull gold or silver rates on its own, so you need a process. There are three realistic ways to handle it:
- Manual updates with the bulk editor. Shopify Help confirms you can adjust prices for many products at once using the bulk editor, or by importing a product CSV. This works for a small catalogue if one person owns the task every morning and has a checklist.
- A rate sync app. Search the Shopify App Store for metal rate pricing apps. Before installing, read the app's own documentation to confirm where it gets its rates, how often it updates, and how it handles making charges and stone values. If the developer does not say where the rates come from, treat that as a warning.
- A custom app. If your pricing formula is complex, for example different making charges by design or weight band, a private app can pull rates from a source you choose, apply your formula and update variant prices through the Admin API.
Whichever route you take, tell buyers when the price was last updated and how long a cart price holds. A rate that moves between product page and payment, without explanation, is a fast way to lose trust on a high-value order.
Which payment options suit high-value jewellery orders?
Shopify Payments is not available in India, so jewellery stores use Indian gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU. Compare them on settlement times, high-value card acceptance and EMI options. Our Razorpay and Cashfree comparison covers the setup in detail.
- EMI. Razorpay's documentation describes card EMI and cardless EMI, which lets a customer pay in instalments without a credit or debit card. Each EMI partner has its own minimum order amount, so check the current limits in your gateway's docs before advertising EMI on product pages.
- Cash on delivery. Think hard before offering COD on gold. A refused high-value parcel ties up stock and adds return shipping and insurance costs. Many stores cap COD by order value or offer it only on silver and fashion lines. See our notes on cutting COD returns to origin.
- Bank transfer. Some buyers prefer it for large orders. Shopify lets you add manual payment methods such as bank deposit, and you mark the order as paid once the money arrives, so reconcile before you fulfil.
For large orders, a short verification call before dispatch is a sensible manual step. It is cheaper than a fraudulent chargeback on a gold chain.
How should you ship and insure jewellery?
Shipping high-value parcels is mostly about choosing the right courier service and reading its terms carefully. Before you go live:
- Check declared value limits. Couriers and aggregators set their own maximum declared values and liability limits for precious items. Read the current terms for the exact service you will use, in writing, because these limits differ by courier and change over time.
- Arrange separate transit insurance if needed. If your typical order is above the courier's liability limit, talk to an insurer about transit cover for the gap rather than assuming the courier covers it.
- Use discreet, tamper-evident packaging. Do not print "gold" or the brand name of a jeweller on the outer box. Record a short video of packing each high-value order as evidence in case of a dispute.
- Require proof of delivery. Choose a service with OTP or signature delivery for expensive orders, and share tracking links automatically from Shopify when you mark the order fulfilled.
Which trust signals matter most for a jewellery store?
Buyers spending a large sum online are looking for reasons to believe you are real and accountable. The signals that do the most work:
- Visible business details. Your registered business name, address, GSTIN and a working phone number in the footer and on the contact page.
- A named grievance officer. The E-Commerce Rules require e-commerce entities to display the grievance officer's name, contact details and designation, acknowledge complaints within 48 hours and redress them within one month.
- Clear returns and exchanges. Spell out what can be returned, what is final sale (custom engraving, resized rings) and how buyback or exchange works. Shopify's return rules let you set a return window and mark specific products or collections as final sale. Our returns and exchanges guide covers the setup.
- Honest reviews with photos. The E-Commerce Rules also bar inventory sellers from posting reviews while posing as consumers. Collect genuine reviews after delivery and never seed fake ones.
- A certificate in the box. Include a printed note with metal, purity, weight, HUID and stone details that matches the product page exactly.
How does GST work for jewellery sold on Shopify?
The CBIC gems and jewellery FAQ states that GST is payable at 3% on the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not. The same FAQ says a registered job worker pays GST at 5% on job charges only. Rates were rationalised across many goods in September 2025, so confirm the current rate for your items with your CA before launch.
In Shopify, set up tax so the 3% applies to jewellery products, and make sure your invoices show your GSTIN and the HSN code for each item. Our GST setup guide for Shopify India walks through tax settings and invoicing apps.

Do you need a custom theme for a jewellery store?
Usually not at the start. A good theme from the Shopify Theme Store with strong image zoom, video support, variant images and metafield support through dynamic sources covers most of what a jewellery store needs. Custom work earns its cost when you need something the theme cannot do: live rate pricing tied to your own formula, a price breakup block that calculates from weight and rate, appointment booking for video viewing, or a buyback calculator. Start with the theme, add custom pieces where they clearly help sales, and give yourself time to test before Diwali traffic. Our Diwali readiness checklist lists what to freeze and what to test.
