Home Decor and Handicraft Brands on Shopify in India
Home decor and handicraft brands run into Shopify problems that apparel and beauty brands never see. A brass lamp is heavy, a ceramic vase breaks, a hand block printed bedsheet is never quite identical twice, and a carved wooden chest may be made only after someone orders it. This guide covers how to set up shipping for fragile and bulky pieces, how to sell one-of-a-kind and made-to-order products, how to tell a craft or GI story honestly, and what a decor product page needs.
Shopify details are from the Shopify Help Centre and GI details from IP India, checked on 9 October 2026. Shopify changes its settings and app requirements often, so confirm each option in your own admin before you rely on it.
Why does a home decor store need a different Shopify setup?
Because the default setup assumes small, light, identical products that sit on a shelf until someone buys them. Decor and handicraft catalogues break all three assumptions.
- Size and weight vary wildly. A set of coasters and a floor mirror can sit in the same catalogue. One flat shipping rate will either overcharge the coasters or lose money on the mirror.
- Breakage is a real cost. Glass, ceramic, terracotta and marble need packaging that adds weight and volume, and a damaged delivery costs you the product, the shipping both ways and often the customer.
- Stock is not always stock. Many pieces are single items or are made to order by an artisan, which changes how inventory, delivery promises and payments work.
- The story sells the product. Buyers pay for the craft, the region and the maker. That story has to be accurate, especially if you mention a geographical indication.
None of this needs a custom build on day one. Most of it is configuration in the Shopify admin, done carefully before launch rather than patched after the first broken parcel.
How do you ship fragile and bulky items without losing money?
Separate your products by how they ship, then give each group its own rates. Shopify's tool for this is the shipping profile. Shopify's shipping profiles help page describes a shipping profile as "a set of shipping rules for specific products and locations", and you can create up to 99 custom profiles on top of the general one. Shopify uses fragile products as an example of items that might need their own profile with different rates.
Inside each profile, flat rates can carry conditions. Shopify lists price based rates with conditions on order value and weight based rates with conditions on item weight. For decor, weight based conditions are usually the useful ones, which means every product needs an accurate shipping weight, including packaging.
Shopify also lets you save the packages you ship in. Its help page says to "set up the packages that you use for shipping, including dimensions and weights, so carriers can calculate accurate costs and handle your shipments correctly." Couriers in India commonly bill on volumetric weight for large, light parcels, so a padded box for a lampshade can cost more to ship than its real weight suggests. Check how your courier or aggregator calculates it before you set rates.
| Product group | Example | Shipping profile approach |
|---|---|---|
| Small and sturdy | Coasters, cushion covers, textiles | General profile, simple flat or weight based rates |
| Fragile | Ceramics, glass, terracotta | Own profile, rates that include protective packaging weight |
| Bulky or heavy | Mirrors, furniture, large brassware | Own profile, weight based conditions, possibly limited zones |
| Made to order | Custom carved or woven pieces | Own profile if the dispatch location or courier differs |
Courier choice matters as much as the rates. Our guide to choosing a shipping aggregator or direct courier covers what to check on damage claims, weight disputes and COD remittance before you sign up.
How should you sell one-of-a-kind and made-to-order pieces?
Treat them as two different cases, because Shopify handles them differently.
One-of-a-kind pieces. Keep inventory tracking on and set the quantity to 1. Shopify's inventory guide says tracking "is useful when you need to monitor stock levels and prevent overselling." Once the piece sells, it shows as sold out instead of being sold twice. If you sell the same piece at an exhibition or in a physical shop, update the stock immediately or the online listing will still show it.
Made-to-order pieces. Shopify lists made-to-order items among products that might not need inventory tracking. The alternative is to keep tracking on and allow sales after stock reaches zero. Shopify's help page says you can let customers buy "even after the inventory reaches zero", and names pre-orders and made-to-order items as uses for that setting.
Whichever you choose, the delivery promise is the part that goes wrong. A customer who expects a parcel in a few days and receives a handmade chest weeks later will ask for a refund. Show the making and dispatch time clearly on the product page, near the price, and repeat it in the order confirmation email. A product metafield for "made to order lead time" lets you show a different time per product without editing the theme for each one.
Can an Indian Shopify store take pre-orders and part payments?
Yes for pre-orders, with a catch on part payments. Shopify's pre-orders page says that "to use pre-orders, you need to install a pre-order app from the Shopify App Store and then manage pre-orders in the Shopify admin." It also says merchants can collect full, partial or no payment when the order is placed.
The catch is that the same page says this pre-order feature requires Shopify Payments or PayPal Express. Shopify Payments is not available in India, and Indian stores take payments through gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU. In practice that means:
- Taking full payment upfront for a made-to-order or pre-order piece works with your normal Indian gateway.
- Deposits and balance payments depend on what your chosen pre-order app and payment gateway actually support together. Read the app's documentation for Indian gateways before you promise customers a part payment option.
- A manual approach, such as a deposit product plus a balance invoice, works but needs clear wording so customers understand what they are paying for and when.

How do you tell the artisan or GI story without overclaiming?
Tell the story you can prove. Craft heritage is a strong reason to buy, and it is also where small brands most often say more than they should.
A geographical indication is a specific legal status, not a marketing phrase. IP India's introduction to geographical indications describes a GI as "an indication which originates from a definite geographical territory" used to identify agricultural, natural or manufactured goods with qualities or a reputation tied to that region. Its examples include Kanchipuram silk sarees and Kolhapuri chappals. Registration gives legal protection in India and helps prevent unauthorised use, and a registered GI stays valid for 10 years and can be renewed.
Producers of a registered GI product can apply to become authorised users. Before you call a product GI tagged on your store, check two things on IP India's GI records: that the GI is registered for that product, and that your maker is an authorised user. If you cannot confirm both, describe the region and the craft without the GI claim. "Hand block printed in Bagru" is a description. "GI tagged" is a legal claim.
For the story itself, a short maker section on each product page often works better than one long About page. Name the craft, the region, how the piece is made and why each one varies slightly. Keep the same facts in your product descriptions, alt text and collection pages so search engines and AI assistants read one consistent story.
What should a home decor product page show?
Everything a buyer would check by picking the piece up in a shop. Decor returns often come from a size or colour surprise rather than a defect, so the product page is your best return prevention tool.
- Exact dimensions and weight, in centimetres and kilograms, with a photo showing the piece next to something familiar for scale.
- Materials and finish, including what is natural variation, such as wood grain, glaze pooling or hand printing marks.
- Care instructions for brass, wood, textiles or ceramics.
- Dispatch time, especially for made-to-order items.
- Several photos and, where useful, video. Shopify says product media can include images, videos and 3D models, though 3D display needs a compatible theme.
- Descriptive alt text on every image, which helps accessibility and search.

How should you handle damage and returns for handmade decor?
Write the policy before the first breakage, not after. A clear returns and damage policy protects you and reassures buyers who are nervous about ordering fragile items online.
Decide in advance how a customer reports transit damage, what evidence you ask for, how quickly they must report it, and whether you replace, repair or refund. For one-of-a-kind pieces a replacement may be impossible, so say so and explain what happens instead. Many brands also limit change-of-mind returns on made-to-order items, which is reasonable as long as the policy says it clearly before purchase.
Cash on delivery adds a second risk for heavy, high-value pieces: a refused parcel travels back at your cost. Our guide on cutting COD return losses covers order verification and partial prepaid options. For the wider returns workflow, see our returns and exchanges guide for Indian stores.
Can you sell handicrafts abroad from your Shopify store?
Yes, and Indian crafts often have a stronger reason to sell abroad than many other categories. Shopify Markets lets you set prices, currencies and shipping for other countries from the same store.
The difficult parts are not on Shopify. They are international shipping costs for bulky parcels, customs duties at the buyer's end, and export paperwork. Our guide to selling overseas from India without duty surprises walks through how to show landed costs so buyers are not hit with an unexpected charge at delivery. A sensible route is to start international selling with your lighter, sturdier pieces and add bulky items once you have tested costs and couriers.
When do you need a developer for a decor store?
You can set up most of this yourself: shipping profiles, weight based rates, inventory settings, policies and good product pages. Bring in help when:
- Shipping costs depend on combinations that flat or weight based rates cannot express, such as size and destination together.
- You want made-to-order lead times, maker details or care instructions shown consistently across hundreds of products using metafields.
- You need deposits, custom orders or personalisation that your apps and Indian gateway do not support together.
- You sell the same one-of-a-kind stock online, at exhibitions and in a shop, and need inventory to stay accurate across all of them.
