What Not to Change on Your Shopify Store Before Diwali

The weeks before Diwali are when Indian Shopify stores take their biggest orders of the year, and also when a small change can quietly break checkout. Big engineering teams handle this with a change freeze: a period when only safe, tested changes go live. This guide sets out what to stop changing on your Shopify store before Diwali, what is still safe to change, and the dates to plan around in 2026.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November. Shopify feature details are from the Shopify Help Centre and changelog, checked on 6 October 2026.

What is a change freeze, and does a Shopify store need one?

A change freeze is a simple rule: from a set date until the peak is over, nothing goes live on the store unless it has been tested and is needed for the sale. It exists because most store breakdowns during a sale are not caused by traffic. They are caused by a change made the same week: a theme edit, a new app, a discount that stacks with another, a script pasted into the theme.

Shopify runs the servers, so a Shopify store does not crash the way a self-hosted site can. What Shopify does not control is your theme code, your apps, your discounts and your integrations. Those are the parts that break, and they are the parts a freeze protects. For a store that makes a large share of its year in October and November, a freeze is cheap insurance.

When should the Diwali freeze start?

Work back from the peak. If your heaviest days are the run-up to Dhanteras and Diwali, a sensible plan for 2026 is:

Period What happens
Now to mid October Finish and test every change you want live for Diwali: theme, offers, apps, landing pages
Mid October Soft freeze. Only fixes, content and pre-planned campaign changes
Late October to Diwali week Hard freeze. Emergency fixes only, each tested on a theme copy first
After Bhai Dooj Lift the freeze, review what went wrong, then resume bigger work

Adjust the dates to your own sales pattern. A gifting brand whose orders peak a week before Diwali, because of delivery times, needs an earlier freeze than a brand whose peak is on Dhanteras itself. Look at last year's orders by day to decide.

What should you stop changing before Diwali?

These are the changes that most often cause trouble during a sale. Make them now, or wait until after the season.

  • Theme switches and redesigns. A new theme or a redesign changes every page at once. Even if it looks right, it can break app blocks, tracking, filters or the cart drawer. Our guide to updating a customised theme safely covers how to test these properly, which takes time you will not have in Diwali week.
  • Theme updates. The same applies to updating your theme to a new version. Wait.
  • New apps that touch the storefront or checkout. Upsell widgets, COD apps, checkout apps, pop-ups and review apps add code to your pages. Install and test them now or after the season, not in the peak.
  • Payment gateway or checkout app changes. Switching gateway, changing COD rules or moving to a new checkout app is a big change. If it is not live and tested by mid October, leave it.
  • Courier and shipping changes. New shipping rules or a new courier integration can show wrong charges or fail to sync orders, which only shows up once orders pile up.
  • Pasted code. Tracking scripts, chat widgets and snippets pasted into the theme by a marketer or agency are a common cause of slow pages and broken buttons. Route every one through whoever owns the theme.
  • Bulk product edits. A CSV import with an error can overwrite prices, stock or variants across the catalogue. If you must run one, export a backup first and test on a few products.

What is still safe to change during the freeze?

A freeze does not mean the store goes still. Most of what marketing needs during Diwali is content, and content is safe when it uses the theme's existing sections:

  • Banners, images and copy in existing sections.
  • New products and collections, added one at a time and checked.
  • Announcement bar messages.
  • Discounts that were set up and tested in advance, switched on and off on schedule.
  • Prices on individual products.
  • Email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, which sit outside the store.

The rule of thumb: if the change uses something that already exists and has been tested, it is usually safe. If it adds new code, a new app or a new rule, it waits.

How do you launch festive changes without editing the live store?

Prepare everything in advance and schedule it. Two Shopify tools make this easier:

  1. Theme copies. Duplicate your live theme, build the Diwali version on the copy, preview it on a phone and test checkout from it. When the day comes, the change is already built.
  2. Rollouts. Shopify's Rollouts tool lets you schedule theme changes, and since 2 October 2026 discounts as well, so a festive theme section, banner and offer can go live together at a set time. We covered this in our guide to testing Diwali offers with Rollouts. Rollouts are available on the Basic plan or higher.

Scheduling has a second benefit. Nobody has to be awake at midnight on Dhanteras changing banners, which is exactly when mistakes happen.

What about changes you do not make yourself?

A freeze covers your own team, but your store also changes without anyone on it touching the admin. Two sources matter in the festive weeks:

  • App updates. App developers ship updates on their own schedule, and an update to a widget or checkout app can change how it behaves on your store. Before the freeze, list every app that adds code to your storefront or checkout, and check each developer's changelog or support page for planned releases. If an app misbehaves during the peak, the developer's support team is your first call, so know how to reach them.
  • Shopify platform changes. Shopify releases new features and changes through the year, and some roll out gradually. Most are harmless, but it is worth glancing at the Shopify changelog once a week during the season, so a change in checkout or analytics does not surprise you on a busy day.

Neither of these is in your control, which is why the testing below matters. A store that was tested recently is easier to diagnose than one nobody has looked at closely for months. Our app stack audit guide helps you decide which apps you need at all.

What should you test before the freeze starts?

Test the paths that make money, on a phone, as a customer would:

  1. Home page to product to cart to checkout, with a prepaid order and a COD order.
  2. Every live discount, alone and combined, to confirm they do not stack in ways you did not intend.
  3. Your free shipping threshold and shipping charges for a few different pin codes.
  4. Order confirmation emails and WhatsApp messages.
  5. That orders reach your courier, warehouse or ERP correctly.
  6. Page speed on your top landing pages after all festive banners and apps are in place.

Write down how the store looked and worked on the day of testing. If something breaks later, you will know what changed.

Who should be allowed to change the store during the freeze?

Fewer people than usual. Review staff and collaborator accounts and decide who can publish theme changes, install apps and edit discounts during the peak. Agencies, freelancers and app developers often have collaborator access from past projects, and an unannounced change from any of them can undo your testing. Our guide to collaborator accounts and developer access explains how to review and limit access.

Agree a simple rule with everyone: any change during the freeze needs a named owner, a reason and a test on a theme copy first. Keep a short log of what changed and when. If the conversion rate drops on a Thursday afternoon, the log tells you where to look.

What if something breaks during Diwali week?

Have the plan ready before you need it:

  • Keep the last good theme. Do not delete the theme you were running before the festive version. Republishing it is the fastest way back from a bad theme change.
  • Know how to switch off each app. If a widget breaks the cart, disabling its app embed or block is often enough.
  • Have a backup payment option. If your main gateway or checkout app has a problem, know in advance what you would switch to.
  • Know who to call. Have your developer's or agency's contact and availability agreed for the festive dates, not discovered on the day.

Our article on emergency Shopify support covers what to do in the first hour of a store problem, and our Diwali readiness guide covers stock, logistics, COD and support for the season.
