Setting up Shopify for fitness equipment brands in India
Selling dumbbells, benches and treadmills on Shopify is a different job from selling t-shirts. Heavy, bulky orders change your shipping rates, your product pages, your payment options and the questions customers ask before they pay. This guide covers the Shopify setup decisions that matter for an Indian fitness brand: how to charge shipping by weight, what a heavy product page must answer, how EMI works through Indian gateways, and how to handle assembly and warranty without confusing your team.
Shopify details are from the Shopify Help Center and shopify.dev, checked on 8 October 2026. EMI details are from Razorpay's documentation and the Cashfree Payments listing on the Shopify App Store, and courier details from the Shiprocket listing, checked the same day. Gateways change their terms often, so confirm current eligibility and fees with your own gateway before launch.
Why does heavy equipment need a different Shopify setup?
Because Shopify's defaults assume that most products cost roughly the same to ship, and that a buyer can decide from a few photos and a price. Neither holds for a 40 kg bench or a folding treadmill. Four things change.
- Shipping cost scales with weight. A single flat rate either overcharges the buyer of a skipping rope or undercharges the buyer of a weight plate set, and you absorb the difference on every heavy order.
- Buyers ask more before they pay. Dimensions, floor space, maximum user weight, assembly and warranty all come up. If the product page does not answer them, the questions arrive on WhatsApp, or the buyer leaves.
- Ticket sizes invite EMI. When a single item costs more than a monthly grocery bill, many buyers look for a way to split the payment.
- After sales is part of the product. A large item that arrives damaged, or a bench with missing bolts, costs far more to fix than a wrong size t-shirt, and your order data needs to capture what the customer chose.
None of this needs a custom platform. It needs the right use of shipping profiles, product data and your payment gateway, set up before your first heavy order ships.
How should you charge shipping for heavy items on Shopify?
Use weight-based rates inside a separate shipping profile for your heavy products. That is the short answer, and it covers most fitness stores.
Shopify's guide to shipping zones and rates describes two kinds of conditional manual rates: price-based rates with conditions on order value, and weight-based rates "with conditions based on the item weight", where you set a minimum and maximum weight for each tier. Rates sit inside shipping zones, which Shopify defines as "a group of countries or regions". Shopify does not let you set manual rates by pin code, so pin code level pricing has to come from your courier partner or an app.
The second tool is the shipping profile. Shopify's own example for custom profiles is fragile products that "need more expensive shipping options", which is exactly the situation with heavy equipment. You can create up to 99 custom shipping profiles per store. A common structure for a fitness brand looks like this:
| Shipping profile | What goes in it | How to rate it |
|---|---|---|
| General | Bands, mats, bottles, apparel, small accessories | Flat or order value based rates, free shipping above a threshold you can afford |
| Heavy | Dumbbells, plates, kettlebells, benches | Weight-based tiers per zone, set from your courier's actual weight slabs |
| Bulky or freight | Treadmills, multi gyms, racks | Higher weight tiers, or a fixed rate per zone, with any delivery area limits stated on the product page |
Two practical points decide whether this works. First, every variant needs its correct shipping weight in Shopify, including packaging, because weight-based rates read that number. A 10 kg dumbbell pair that is saved as 0 kg will ship at your lowest tier. Second, copy your weight tiers from the courier's real rate card rather than guessing. When the courier revises its slabs, revise yours.
For fulfilment, most Indian stores connect a courier aggregator. The Shiprocket listing on the Shopify App Store, for example, describes "25+ courier partners on one platform" and shipping to "24000+ pincodes", with courier recommendation and tracking updates to buyers. If you are deciding between running dispatch yourself and handing it to a warehouse partner, our guide to choosing a 3PL for a Shopify store covers the trade-offs.
What must a heavy equipment product page answer?
It must answer every question that would otherwise stop the sale: size, weight, space, assembly, delivery and warranty. Put them near the price, not at the bottom of a long description.
| Buyer question | Where to answer it | Shopify feature to use |
|---|---|---|
| How big and how heavy is it? | A specs block near the price | Product metafields shown through theme blocks |
| Will it fit my room? | Specs block, with assembled dimensions | Metafields, plus one photo with a person for scale |
| Who assembles it? | Option on the product form | Line item property or a separate add-on product |
| When will it arrive? | Near the add to cart button | Shipping policy plus a short delivery note per profile |
| What does the warranty cover? | A collapsible section | Product metafield or a shared page linked from every product |
| Can I pay in instalments? | Under the price | Your gateway's widget, if it offers one |
Metafields keep specs consistent across a large catalogue. Shopify's Help Center explains that if your theme supports metafields, you can connect them to sections or blocks that support dynamic sources, such as the product information section, by "clicking the connect dynamic source icon" in the theme editor. That means you fill in weight, dimensions and maximum user weight once per product, and the theme lays them out the same way everywhere. For a deeper look, see our explainer on metafields and metaobjects.
For assembly, line item properties work well. Shopify's developer docs describe them as a way to "give customers the option to include additional information for a variant that's added to the cart", using form fields on the product page that then show in the cart and checkout. A simple choice such as "Self assembly" or "Assembly visit needed" travels with the order, so your dispatch team sees it without a phone call. If assembly is paid, a separate add-on product is cleaner, because it has its own price and stock.

How does EMI work for a Shopify store in India?
EMI comes from your payment gateway, not from Shopify. Shopify Payments is not available in India, so Indian stores take payments through gateways such as Razorpay, Cashfree and PayU, and EMI is offered only if your gateway supports it on Shopify and has enabled it for your account.
Check the Shopify side of each gateway, not just its general feature list. The Cashfree Payments listing on the Shopify App Store states that it brings "Credit Card EMI, Debit Card EMI and Cardless EMI along with BNPL" to Shopify stores, and lists the app itself as free to install, with transaction fees charged separately. Razorpay's documentation lists credit card EMI, debit card EMI, no cost EMI, low cost EMI and cardless EMI as payment methods, but its Shopify integration guide lists "UPI, Cards, Wallets and Netbanking" and does not mention EMI. If EMI is central to your pricing, ask Razorpay in writing whether it appears on your Shopify checkout before you promise it on product pages.
Three details from Razorpay's credit card EMI documentation are worth knowing even if you use another gateway, because they shape what buyers experience:
- Minimums depend on the bank. Razorpay's table lists different minimum amounts per issuer, for example Rs 1,000 for HDFC Bank, Rs 2,500 for IDFC Bank, Rs 3,000 for Axis Bank and Rs 5,000 for American Express. A low priced accessory may not show EMI at all.
- Eligibility depends on the card. Razorpay notes that eligibility "depends on the customer's card's BIN", and if the card is not eligible the customer pays the full amount.
- Conversion happens after payment. The full amount is authorised first and "converted into EMIs within 3-4 days", which matters when a buyer calls asking why their card shows the full charge.
Razorpay also notes that instant refunds are not supported on EMI, cardless EMI and Pay Later. Mention that in your returns process so your support team gives buyers accurate answers. If you are still choosing a gateway, read our comparison of Razorpay and Cashfree on Shopify.
How should you handle assembly, damage and warranty claims?
Decide the policy first, then make Shopify carry it. Shopify has no built-in warranty module, so the work is in clear pages, consistent order data and a claim process your team can follow.
- Write one warranty page. State what is covered, for how long, what is excluded, and how to raise a claim. Link it from every product through a metafield or a shared block, so you change it once.
- Ask for an unboxing video on large items. State in your shipping policy that transit damage must be reported with photos or video within a set window. This gives you evidence for courier claims.
- Put key instructions in the order confirmation. Shopify lets you customise notification templates with Liquid variables, so the confirmation email for heavy items can carry assembly guidance and the claim contact.
- Tag orders by profile. Tagging heavy and bulky orders makes them easy to filter for follow-up calls after delivery.
- Log claims by product and cause. Transit damage, missing parts and genuine defects need different fixes: better packaging, a packing checklist, or a supplier conversation.
Returns on heavy goods are expensive in both directions, so your return rules for bulky items may differ from accessories. Our guide to returns and exchanges on Shopify in India is a good next read when you write those rules.
Do you need a custom app for a fitness store?
Usually not at the start. Shipping profiles, metafields, line item properties and a gateway with EMI handle the core needs of most fitness catalogues.
A custom app starts to make sense when a rule depends on data Shopify does not hold, for example blocking checkout for pin codes your bulky courier cannot reach, booking an assembly technician automatically, or pushing warranty start dates into your support tool. Custom apps are not limited to Shopify Plus. Shopify's Help Center says store owners automatically have full access to create and manage custom apps, and staff can be given that permission. Before you build, check whether an existing app already does the job well enough, because every custom integration is something you have to maintain.
What should you set up before the Diwali rush?
Fix the parts that cost money on every order first. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 and Dhanteras on 6 November. If you run festive offers, the weeks before are the time to:
- Audit every variant's shipping weight, including packaging.
- Move heavy and bulky products into their own shipping profiles with tested rates.
- Place a test order for one item from each profile to two or three zones and compare the charged rate with your courier's actual cost.
- Confirm with your gateway that EMI shows on your live Shopify checkout, and test it with a real card.
- Publish the warranty page and the assembly option, and brief your support team on EMI refunds.
Avoid large theme or app changes in the final days before the festival. Small, tested fixes made now are safer than a rebuild during peak traffic.
