Shopify Canvas, and When You Still Need a Developer
On 1 October 2026, Shopify announced Canvas, a new way to design an online store where every page sits in one zoomable workspace and Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, makes changes as you describe them. It is a genuine step forward for store owners who want control over design. It is also in early access with real limits: no third-party themes, no app blocks, no theme updates. This guide explains what Canvas does, what it cannot do yet, and when you still need a designer or developer.
Details below are from Shopify's changelog entry of 1 October 2026 and the Canvas pages in the Shopify Help Centre, checked on 5 October 2026. Canvas is new and changing quickly, so recheck the limits before you plan around them.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas is a design surface for your online store theme. Instead of editing one page at a time in the theme editor, you see all your store's templates side by side in one infinite workspace. According to Shopify's announcement, you can:
- Pan across every page of your store and zoom in on any detail.
- Click any element to edit it directly, or tell Sidekick what you want in the chat.
- Watch Sidekick's changes land in real time, from a single section to a store-wide redesign.
- Preview the real, working store, with interactions, animations, and different products, collections and screen sizes.
Shopify's Canvas help page adds that you can build new themes from a description of your brand, test changes on theme copies, and ask Sidekick for changes that are not available in block settings.
What does Shopify say Canvas is for?
Shopify's own pitch is speed and control without code. In its announcement on the Shopify newsroom, Ben Sehl, Director of Product at Shopify and co-founder of the brand Kotn, said: "Today, an entrepreneur on Shopify can build a fully custom store in twenty minutes." The same post says Sidekick made more than 25 million edits to themes in the first half of 2026, and that in Canvas it now asks questions, proposes approaches, remembers design preferences, and validates code and reviews screenshots before delivering a result.
Two points in the announcement are easy to miss. Shopify says Canvas is "not replacing the existing editor yet", so the theme editor you know is staying for now. And Shopify's design director, Austin Knight, was candid that "getting Sidekick to write code was easy, but guiding it to make good design decisions took time." That is the right way to read the twenty-minute claim: Canvas can produce a custom-looking store quickly. Whether it is the right store for your brand and customers is still a separate question.
Who can use Canvas right now?
Not everyone, yet. The help page states that Canvas "is in early access and is available only to certain stores," and the changelog says it is rolling out to existing stores. The requirements page lists what a store and user need:
- A desktop computer. Canvas is not available on mobile.
- A Shopify plan that includes theme customisation.
- For staff, the Online store, Themes, Edit code permission.
- A Shopify-made theme or a custom theme. Third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store are not supported.
You start from Online Store, then Themes, by creating a new theme in Canvas or duplicating a Shopify theme or custom theme into it. Your original theme stays in the current theme editor, so trying Canvas does not touch your live store until you choose to publish.
What can Canvas not do yet?
This is the part to read before you plan a redesign around it. According to the changelog and the requirements page:
| Limit | What it means for your store |
|---|---|
| No third-party themes | If your store runs on a theme bought from the Theme Store, you cannot open it in Canvas |
| No app blocks or app embeds | Reviews widgets, WhatsApp buttons, upsell blocks and other app features cannot be added or configured in Canvas |
| No theme updates | A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving updates from the theme's developer |
| No theme file download | You cannot download a Canvas-edited theme's files |
| No multi-market customisation | Market-specific theme changes are not supported |
| Limited Rollouts support | A Canvas theme can be used as a replacement in a rollout, but rollouts cannot edit it |
| Translations through Translate and Adapt only | Content translation happens in the app, not in Canvas |
| Blocks added through Sidekick | You cannot add blocks manually, only by asking Sidekick |
Two of these matter most for Indian D2C stores. Many run on third-party themes, which rules Canvas out today. And many rely on apps for checkout, reviews, WhatsApp and offers, which Canvas cannot place on the page yet.

Does Canvas replace a Shopify designer or developer?
For some stores, it replaces some of the work. It does not replace the judgement.
Where Canvas helps on its own. A small or new store on a Shopify-made theme, with few apps, that wants a better-looking homepage, cleaner product pages or a seasonal refresh. Describing a change to Sidekick and seeing it land across every template is faster than editing section by section, and many owners will get a good result without outside help.
Where you still need people. Canvas makes changes. It does not decide which changes will sell more. A designer still decides what the store should say and in what order, how the brand should look on a phone, and what to leave out. A developer is still needed for anything Canvas cannot reach: app integrations, custom functionality, checkout customisation, performance work, Markets setup and anything on a third-party theme.
There is also a maintenance question. Because a Canvas-edited theme no longer receives theme updates, someone has to own its upkeep, in the same way a heavily customised theme needs an owner. We cover how that works in our guide to updating a customised Shopify theme safely.
For brands that already have a custom theme built by a developer, Canvas may become a useful layer on top rather than a replacement. Custom themes are supported, so once app blocks arrive, a team could keep its developer-built sections and use Canvas for layout and content changes. Until then, check with whoever built your theme before opening it in Canvas, because the edited copy will no longer receive their updates.
Should you redesign your store in Canvas before Diwali?
Probably not your live store. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, and the weeks before it are when most Indian stores take their biggest orders of the year. That is the worst time to move a working store onto a tool in early access, especially one that does not support app blocks.
A sensible approach for most stores:
- Duplicate, do not replace. If Canvas is available on your store and you are on a Shopify-made theme, duplicate your theme into Canvas and experiment on the copy.
- Check every app. List which apps add blocks or embeds to your theme. Anything Canvas cannot place would be missing from a Canvas version.
- Keep the festive season on your current theme. Use our Diwali readiness guide for what to fix before the peak instead.
- Revisit after the season, when Canvas has more features and you have time to test properly.
How does Canvas compare with the theme editor and custom development?
| Option | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Theme editor | Day-to-day changes on any theme, including third-party ones | Limited to the sections and settings the theme provides |
| Canvas with Sidekick | Fast visual redesigns on Shopify-made or custom themes with few apps | Early access, no app blocks, no theme updates |
| Custom theme development | Brands that need specific features, integrations or a distinctive design | Costs more upfront and needs an owner for maintenance |
These are not exclusive. A developer can build custom sections into a custom theme, and the brand team can then use Canvas for layout and content changes on top, once it supports what the store needs. If you are weighing up the bigger choice, our article on a custom theme versus a premium theme sets out the costs and benefits.
What should you do this month?
- Check whether Canvas has appeared under Online Store, then Themes, on your store.
- Note which theme you run. If it is a third-party theme, Canvas is not an option yet.
- List the apps that add blocks to your storefront.
- If you try it, try it on a copy, and keep your live theme in the normal editor through Diwali.
