Launching a Shopify Store Before Diwali 2026, What to Cut
Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 and Dhanteras on 6 November, so a founder starting today has about four weeks before the biggest buying days of the year. A common question this month is whether a brand new Shopify store can be live and taking real orders by then. It can, but only if the scope is small and the steps you do not control start this week. This guide covers what decides your timing, what must be done before the first order, and what to cut.
Shopify launch steps, test order options and domain details are from the Shopify Help Centre. Payment gateway requirements are from Razorpay's documentation. All checked on 9 October 2026. Both change from time to time, so confirm inside your own admin and dashboard before you rely on them.
Can a new brand still launch a Shopify store before Diwali 2026?
Yes, if three things are true. Your products, prices and photos are ready or nearly ready. You accept a simple store at launch rather than the full vision. And the parts that depend on other companies, mainly payment gateway activation and any category certificates, start now rather than at the end.
The design and setup work inside Shopify is the part founders worry about most, and it is usually the part they control best. A clean premium theme, a tidy catalogue and working checkout can come together quickly when decisions are made fast. What stalls festive launches is the waiting: a gateway account sitting in review, a missing certificate, a domain still pointing at an old site, a courier account that is not approved.
So the honest answer is not about how fast a store can be built. It is about whether every outside dependency can be cleared before customers start shopping for Diwali. If one of them cannot, the launch date moves no matter how quickly the store is designed.
What decides whether you make it in time?
Before you pick a theme, list every step where someone else sets the pace. This table covers the common ones for an Indian D2C store.
| Step | Who controls the timing | What to do this week |
|---|---|---|
| Payment gateway activation | The gateway's review team | Sign up, finish KYC and add your website and policy links now |
| Category certificates (food, jewellery, ayurveda and others) | The issuing authority | Check whether your category needs one and whether you already hold it |
| Custom domain going live | DNS, which Shopify says can take up to 48 hours | Connect the domain early, not on launch day |
| Courier or aggregator account | The shipping partner | Open the account and confirm pickup from your address |
| Product photos and content | You and your photographer | Lock the launch range and shoot it first |
| Store build and setup | You or your developer | Choose a theme and freeze the scope |
The first two rows deserve the most attention. Razorpay's activation documentation lists extra documents for certain business types. It says an FSSAI certificate "is required for all food manufacturing and serving businesses based in India", that jewellery sellers "are required to have a BIS Certificate", and that the AYUSH certificate "is mandatory for all retail ayurvedic-related businesses". If your product falls into a category like these and you do not have the certificate yet, that is your real launch date, not the store build.
What must be done before you take the first real order?
Shopify's own launch preparation page lists the required steps. You need to select a subscription plan, add a store address in Settings, set up a payment method "and make sure that test mode is deactivated", and place at least one test order. Shopify also notes that if a store is on a trial plan or has no business address, you are prompted to complete that step before you can remove the store password.
For an Indian store, add these to the list:
- A live payment gateway. Shopify Payments and Shop Pay are not available to Indian businesses, so you will use a gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree or PayU. Our comparison of Indian payment gateways for Shopify covers how they differ.
- The policy pages your gateway checks. Razorpay's website details page asks for links to "About us, Contact us, Pricing details, Terms and conditions, Privacy policy and Refunds policy", and says it runs automated checks on your site and policy pages.
- GST settings. If you are registered, your tax settings and invoices need to be right before orders arrive. See our GST setup guide for Shopify.
- Shipping rates and a pickup arrangement. Customers see shipping costs at checkout, so rates must exist before launch, and someone must be able to collect parcels.
- Order notifications. Check that order confirmation emails show your brand name, correct contact details and the right return information.
Shopify can generate templates for store policies, but its help page is clear that "you're responsible for following your published policies." Read every policy before you publish it. A refund policy that promises something your operations cannot deliver becomes a problem the first time a customer asks for a return.

What can you cut from a festive launch?
Most founders arrive with a long wish list. A store that launches in time with a short list will usually earn more this season than a fuller store that launches after the festival. Here is how we would split it.
| Keep for launch | Move to after Diwali |
|---|---|
| Your best selling or most giftable products, fully listed | The full catalogue with every variant |
| A premium theme with your colours, fonts and photos | A custom designed theme |
| One payment gateway, tested end to end | Multiple gateways and custom checkout apps |
| Simple shipping rates that cover your costs | Detailed zone and weight based rules |
| Clear gift messaging or gift wrap option, if you sell gifts | Loyalty programme, subscriptions and bundles builder |
| Basic analytics and your ad pixel | Advanced attribution and dashboards |
| A short About page that explains who you are | Blog, lookbooks and long brand story pages |
The custom theme question comes up every festive season. A premium theme set up well looks professional and is far quicker to get right. We explain the trade off in our post on custom versus premium Shopify themes. For a first Diwali, the premium route is almost always the right call.
Apps are the other place to cut. Every app adds setup, testing and something else that can break during your busiest week. Install only what you need to take, ship and support orders. Everything else can wait for a quieter month.
Should you offer cash on delivery from day one?
For most Indian categories, customers expect it, and a new brand with no reviews gives buyers fewer reasons to trust prepaid. Shopify lists cash on delivery as a manual payment method you can switch on under Settings, then Payments, according to its manual payments guide.
The risk is return to origin. COD orders that are refused at the door cost you shipping both ways and tie up stock during the weeks you most need it. If you offer COD, decide your rules before launch: which pin codes, which order values, and whether you confirm orders by phone or WhatsApp before shipping. Our guide on cutting COD return to origin losses covers the controls in more detail.
How do you test the store before festive traffic arrives?
Test like a customer, on a phone, with real products. Shopify's test orders guide gives three ways to do it: a simulated transaction through Shopify's test payment gateway, your provider's test mode, or a real order that you cancel and refund straight away, which may cost you processor fees.
Shopify adds a warning worth taking seriously: "Customers can't place live orders during the time that your payment providers are in test mode." Razorpay's Shopify setup has its own test mode toggle, and Razorpay's guide says to turn it off before going live.
Run through this before you announce the launch:
- Place a prepaid order with UPI and a card, and a COD order if you offer it.
- Check the payment shows as captured in your gateway dashboard.
- Check the order confirmation email, the invoice and the GST details.
- Book a shipment for one test order with your courier and confirm the pickup flow.
- Cancel and refund one order to see what the customer receives.
- Open the store on a slow mobile connection and add to cart from a product page reached through an ad link.
Our list of checks before you sign off a Shopify build goes further if a developer is building the store for you.
When is it better to launch after Diwali?
Waiting is the right decision more often than founders expect. We would advise launching after the festival if any of these apply:
- Your payment gateway or a required certificate is still pending close to the festive week.
- Your products, prices or packaging are not final, so photos and listings would need redoing.
- You have no budget left for ads or outreach after the build, so nobody will see the store during the season anyway.
- You cannot fulfil festive volumes, for example if stock is limited or packing depends on one person.
A launch in late November or December is not a lost year. It gives you a calmer period to fix early problems, collect first reviews and build a list of buyers for the next big sale. Our post on where your first launch budget should go covers how to plan spending either way.
If you already run a store and are only adding a new range, the advice is different. A live store should avoid big changes close to the festival, which we cover in our Diwali change freeze guide.
In what order should you do the work?
Order matters more than speed. This sequence puts the slow outside steps first and the quick inside steps last:
- This week. Open your Shopify store, add billing and your business address, start payment gateway signup and KYC, check certificate requirements, and open a courier or aggregator account.
- Next. Lock the launch product range, finish photos and write product descriptions. Choose a theme and connect your domain.
- Then. Build the pages, add policies, set shipping rates and tax settings, and install only the apps you need.
- Before announcing. Connect the gateway, run every test order, switch test mode off, remove the password and place one real order yourself.
- Launch week. Watch every order personally, answer every enquiry quickly, and fix problems before you push more traffic.
