What Shopify Partner Tiers Mean (Registered to Platinum)
If you have been reading agency websites and getting confused about whether "Shopify Plus Partner" still means anything, you are not wrong. The Shopify Partner Program restructured in January 2025. The old standalone Plus Partner badge was sunset on December 31, 2024. The new program runs across five tiers in a Service Partner Track. Here is what each tier actually means in 2026 and what to look for when you are hiring.
Quick read: The Service Partner Track has five tiers. Registered (entry), Select, Plus, Premier, and Platinum. There are roughly 1,443 Select Partners, 838 Plus Partners, 148 Premier Partners, and only 86 Platinum Partners globally. Platinum is invitation-only. Most agencies still say "Shopify Plus Partner" out of habit. That now technically refers to the Plus tier of the new structure.
Why the program changed
Shopify announced the program restructure on January 23, 2025. The old setup had multiple overlapping programs. The standalone Shopify Plus Partner Program. The Plus Certified App Program (PCAP). The original Shopify Expert designation that had already been sunset back in December 2023. Each ran on its own logic, and merchants had no clear way to compare credentials between agencies.
The new program is documented in the official Shopify Partners blog announcement. It consolidates everything into two tracks. A Service Partner Track for agencies, consultancies, and systems integrators. A Technology Partner Track for ISVs, app developers, and ERP providers. Most merchants are hiring from the Service Partner Track, so that is what most of this guide covers.
Tier 1 - Registered
What it is: The entry tier for any agency or freelancer that signs up for the Shopify Partner Program.
Registered status takes about 30 minutes to obtain. You sign up at partners.shopify.com, agree to the terms, and you are in. There is no revenue threshold, no Plus client requirement, and no team size minimum. Registered Partners get access to the partner dashboard, developer tools, the Partner Academy, and a referral commission on stores they sign up for Shopify.
What Registered does not unlock is the public Partner Directory listing. Merchants searching the directory will not see Registered Partners. That listing starts at the Select tier. The honest read of "Registered Partner" on an agency website is that they have signed up but not yet proven anything.
Tier 2 - Select
What it is: The first achievement tier with verifiable commercial activity.
Select requires at least USD $100,000 in new referral and co-sell revenue, OR USD $500,000 in existing merchant revenue. The minimum client count is at least 1 Plus or Enterprise merchant, OR 10 Standard plan merchants. The bar is meaningful. Select Partners have proven they can sign up and serve real merchants, not just complete the registration form.
Globally there are around 1,443 Select Partners. The tier unlocks the Shopify Partner Directory listing, a tier badge for the agency website, and basic priority support. Most working agencies in India, the US, and the UK sit at the Select level.
Tier 3 - Plus
What it is: Mid-tier achievement, focused on Plus-tier merchant work.
Plus tier requires at least 5 active Shopify Plus client engagements with documented positive outcomes. There are also commercial revenue requirements and a credential threshold of 10+ team members holding Verified Skills certifications (waived for 2026 to give agencies a transition year). Globally there are roughly 838 Plus Partners.
This is the tier that used to be called the "Shopify Plus Partner Program" before December 2024. The naming overlap is why merchants get confused. When an agency website says "Shopify Plus Partner" in 2026, they almost always mean they sit at the Plus tier of the Service Partner Track. The credential is the same kind of thing, just under the new program name.
Tier 4 - Premier
What it is: Senior partner tier with deep Plus engineering capability.
Premier tier requires sustained Plus-tier client revenue, demonstrably strong customer satisfaction scores, and a minimum of 25 team members holding Verified Skills (again, waived for 2026). The benefits step up sharply at this tier. Premier Partners get a dedicated Partner Success Manager from Shopify, access to Market Development Funds for joint marketing campaigns, early access to new Shopify features and beta programs, and direct working relationships with Shopify's product and partnership teams.
Globally there are roughly 148 Premier Partners. The tier is significant because it signals an agency that Shopify itself considers a strategic partner, not just a competent vendor. For brands buying Plus-tier services with budgets in the USD $100,000+ range, Premier is the credibility bar that matters.
Tier 5 - Platinum
What it is: The top tier of the Service Partner Track. Invitation-only.
Platinum is not something an agency can apply for. Shopify selects Platinum Partners directly. The criteria include the highest enterprise revenue, technical specialization across Plus and headless capabilities, customer satisfaction metrics above an undisclosed threshold, and a sustained track record of strategic collaboration with Shopify's internal teams.
Globally there are only around 86 Platinum Partners. Platinum Partners get full strategic collaboration with Shopify (joint go-to-market, co-sell, executive-level access), early product roadmap visibility, dedicated technical liaisons, and bespoke growth opportunities. For most merchants this tier is overkill. For Fortune 500 brands and enterprise IPO candidates running multi-region Plus implementations, Platinum is the only credible shortlist.
How the Technology Partner Track differs
If you are hiring an app developer or an integration vendor (an ISV, ERP provider, payment processor, or analytics platform), they are on the Technology Partner Track, not the Service Partner Track. That track has four levels instead of five. Registered, Plus, Premier, and Platinum. The Select tier does not exist on the Technology side.
The Technology track also has an additional credential called "Built for Shopify." This is awarded to apps that meet Shopify's highest quality bar (performance, design consistency, security, merchant satisfaction). An app being Built for Shopify is closer in importance to Premier or Platinum status on the Service side. Most merchants do not need to know the Technology Partner tiers in detail. The Built for Shopify badge on an app listing is the signal that matters.
Tier comparison at a glance
| Tier | Global count | Plus client minimum | Best for hiring when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered | Tens of thousands | None | Almost never. Means signed up but unproven. |
| Select | around 1,443 | 1 Plus or 10 Standard | Standard Shopify projects, mid-market DTC builds. |
| Plus | around 838 | 5+ Plus clients | Shopify Plus implementations and serious mid-market. |
| Premier | around 148 | Sustained Plus revenue + 25 verified skills | Plus-tier work with USD $100K+ budgets, enterprise. |
| Platinum | around 86 | Invitation-only | Fortune 500, multi-region Plus, enterprise IPO candidates. |
What changed about credentials in 2026
One important nuance for the current year. For 2026, Shopify waived the Verified Skills credential requirements at the Plus, Premier, and Platinum tiers. Only commercial activity (revenue, client count, merchant outcomes) is being evaluated. The reason is that the program restructure required existing partners to map their old credentials to new ones, and the transition needed a buffer year. Verified Skills will become a hard requirement again from January 2027 onward.
The practical implication for merchants is that an agency claiming "Plus Partner" status in 2026 has met the commercial bar but may or may not have the team-level credentials. If credentials matter for your hire (regulated industries, government-adjacent ecommerce, or enterprise procurement), ask the agency directly how many team members currently hold Verified Skills certifications.
What about "Shopify Expert" - is that still a thing?
No. The Shopify Expert Marketplace was sunset in December 2023, before the broader Partner Program restructure. Agencies that still describe themselves as "Shopify Experts" on their website are using a deprecated label. The current canonical descriptors are the Partner tier names. If you see "Shopify Expert" on an agency site in 2026, it is a signal that their marketing has not been updated, which is a small but meaningful red flag.
How to verify an agency's actual tier
The cleanest verification path takes two minutes. Go to the official Shopify Partner Directory at partners.shopify.com. Search by agency name. The directory listing shows the current tier (Select, Plus, Premier, or Platinum). More detail on tier benefits and structure is published on the official Shopify Partner Program page. Any agency that claims a tier they do not appear at on the official directory is misrepresenting, full stop. The directory updates quarterly.
Three additional verification questions filter out almost all misrepresentation. Ask for the link to their official Shopify Partner Directory listing. Ask which Shopify account manager (Partner Success Manager or Partner Manager) handles their relationship. Ask for three live Plus or higher-tier client URLs with the year they went live. Real Plus, Premier, and Platinum Partners can answer all three within an hour.
What do Shopify Partner tiers mean when I am hiring an agency?
The tier tells you about scale, credibility, and the kind of work the agency does most. Select Partners are best for standard Shopify and smaller Plus builds. Plus Partners are the working tier for serious mid-market Plus implementations. Premier Partners are the right pick for enterprise work, multi-region rollouts, and budgets above USD $100K. Platinum Partners are reserved for global enterprise and Fortune 500-scale work. The tier does not tell you anything about pricing, account management quality, or design taste. For those you still need to do the reference calls and live-portfolio review.
Is the Plus tier the same as the old Shopify Plus Partner Program?
Functionally yes, technically no. The old standalone Plus Partner Program was sunset on December 31, 2024. The new Plus tier sits inside the Service Partner Track and uses similar (but updated) criteria for entry, including 5+ active Plus client engagements and commercial revenue thresholds. Agencies that were Plus Partners under the old program were placed into either the new Plus or Premier tier depending on their commercial activity. The phrase "Shopify Plus Partner" is still used in the industry as shorthand, but technically the precise current designation is "Plus tier Service Partner."
How long does it take an agency to move up tiers?
Tier evaluations happen quarterly. The fastest realistic path is Registered to Select in 3 to 6 months for an active agency, Select to Plus in 12 to 24 months for an agency focused on Plus-tier work, and Plus to Premier in another 18 to 36 months. Platinum cannot be earned through linear progression. It is invitation-only and tied to Shopify's strategic relationship view of the agency. Most agencies that hit Premier stay there for years before any Platinum conversation happens. For merchants, the practical implication is that an agency at Plus or Premier today probably stays at that tier for the next 12 to 24 months, which makes the tier a reasonable proxy for stability and capability.
Should I hire a higher-tier agency for a smaller project?
Usually no. Premier and Platinum Partners typically have minimum engagement sizes that match their cost base. For a USD $20,000 Plus build, a Plus or Select Partner is almost always the better fit than a Premier or Platinum agency that will treat your project as low-priority next to their enterprise accounts. The exception is when your smaller project is a pilot or proof-of-concept for a larger relationship later. In that case, a Premier or Platinum Partner may invest in the small project at a discount to win the bigger work. Always ask explicitly whether the senior team or the junior team will be on your engagement.
What about Shopify Plus Gold Partner - is that a real tier?
Not anymore, and the naming is the source of significant industry confusion. "Plus Gold Partner" was an informal mid-tier designation used inside the old Shopify Plus Partner Program before the 2024 sunset. It never existed as an officially published tier in the new program. The closest current equivalent is the Premier tier in the Service Partner Track. Some agencies still use "Gold Partner" in marketing materials. That is technically outdated and refers to a program that no longer exists. The current canonical tier names are Registered, Select, Plus, Premier, and Platinum.
How to read agency websites with this knowledge
Most agency websites will say one of three things. "Shopify Partner" (means Registered or Select), "Shopify Plus Partner" or "Certified Shopify Plus Partner" (means Plus tier under the new program), or "Shopify Platinum Partner" (the genuine top tier). If an agency uses outdated language like "Gold Partner" or "Shopify Expert," they are not necessarily bad, but their marketing has not kept up with the 2025 changes. Verify on the official directory. Ask the three verification questions above. Trust the directory over the website every time.
