What Breaks on Shopify's August 26 2026 Checkout Deadline

On 26 August 2026, script tags stop working on the Thank you and Order status pages for every Shopify store that is not on Plus. Checkout keeps taking orders. What stops is the tracking layer sitting on top of it, which is why most merchants will not notice until their ad reporting goes quiet. If your store has anything in Additional Scripts, you have weeks, not months. Email hello@exactwhy.com with subject "Checkout deadline" for a free audit.

What actually changes on 26 August 2026

Shopify has been retiring the old checkout customisation model in stages for two years. The last stage lands this month for non-Plus stores.

Per Shopify's own developer documentation, additional scripts were sunset on the Thank you and Order status pages on 28 August 2025. Script tags were sunset on those same pages on 28 August 2025 for Plus stores, and are sunset for non-Plus stores on 26 August 2026. The core checkout steps, meaning Information, Shipping and Payment, stopped supporting checkout.liquid earlier still.

So the thing expiring this month is narrow and specific. It is not your checkout. It is the ability to inject arbitrary JavaScript into the two pages that come after payment.

That narrowness is exactly why it gets ignored. Nothing on the storefront turns red.

Plus and non-Plus are not on the same timeline

This is the detail most coverage blurs, and getting it wrong leads merchants to either panic early or relax when they should not.

Plus stores. Their deadline was 28 August 2025 and has passed. Shopify's Plus upgrade guide states that from January 2026 it began automatically upgrading stores that had not migrated, with 30 days of email notice, and that page customisations on legacy pages are lost in that process.

Non-Plus stores. The deadline is 26 August 2026. Shopify's guidance for non-Plus merchants directs them to upgrade manually to the checkout and accounts editor. It does not promise the same managed automatic upgrade that Plus stores received.

Read that difference carefully. Several published guides tell non-Plus merchants that Shopify will automatically upgrade them, implying someone else handles the work. The safer assumption, and the one supported by Shopify's non-Plus documentation, is that your customisations stop functioning and nobody rebuilds them for you.

Plan as though nothing is migrated on your behalf. If Shopify does more than that, you have lost nothing by being ready.

One deadline has already passed

Shopify Scripts is gone. Per the Shopify changelog, editing and publishing Scripts ended on 15 April 2026 and execution ended on 30 June 2026.

If your store used Scripts for custom discount, shipping or payment logic, that logic stopped applying over a month ago. Any guide still telling you to migrate Scripts before June is describing a deadline that is behind you.

Worth checking now if you have not: discount rules that quietly stopped firing in July are the kind of thing that shows up as a margin change nobody can explain. Shopify Functions is the replacement, and our Shopify Functions tutorial walks through building a first discount function.

What breaks first for Indian D2C stores

The generic advice on this deadline is written for stores whose post-purchase page holds a Meta pixel and little else. Indian D2C checkouts usually carry more than that.

Attribution stack. Google Ads conversion tags, Meta pixel, and GTM containers placed in Additional Scripts stop firing. Reported ROAS drops while actual sales hold steady, and the first instinct is usually to cut ad spend on campaigns that were working fine.

COD confirmation flows. Plenty of Indian stores trigger WhatsApp or SMS order confirmation from a script on the Thank you page. If that breaks, COD verification silently stops, and RTO climbs weeks before anyone connects the two. Our guide to cutting COD RTO losses covers why that verification step matters so much.

Order status page apps. Shipment tracking widgets and loyalty prompts injected the old way go with it.

Analytics continuity. Anything feeding a dashboard from post-purchase events loses its source. Our Shopify analytics setup guide covers rebuilding measurement that survives changes like this one.

The pattern across all four is the same. Revenue keeps arriving, so nothing looks broken, while the systems you use to make decisions about that revenue go dark.

A triage plan for the weeks that are left

With this little time, the goal is not a tidy migration. It is making sure nothing revenue-critical is lost on the day.

Week one, inventory. Open Settings, then Checkout, and read the Additional Scripts field in full. Copy it somewhere safe. Every tag, pixel and snippet in there is on the list. Check the apps list for anything that injected into checkout the old way.

Week one, classify. Sort each item into three groups. Revenue-critical, meaning ad platform conversion tracking and anything driving order confirmation. Useful, meaning analytics and heatmaps. Dead, meaning tags for tools you stopped using, which on most stores is a surprising share of the field.

Week two, rebuild the critical group. Conversion tracking moves to Web Pixels in the customer events settings. Most major ad platforms now have a supported Shopify app that handles this without custom code, and using it is faster and safer than porting your own snippet.

Week two, rebuild order confirmation. If a script triggered WhatsApp or SMS, move that to a Shopify Flow automation on order creation, or to your messaging provider's Shopify app. Flow triggers on the order rather than the page view, which is more reliable than the script ever was.

Week three, verify with real orders. Place test orders and confirm each restored item actually fires. Do not trust a settings screen that says a pixel is connected. Check that the event arrives in the destination platform.

Then delete the old field. Once everything is rebuilt and verified, clear Additional Scripts yourself rather than waiting for the date.

If you get through inventory and find the field holds one Meta pixel and a dead Hotjar tag, this is an afternoon of work. That is the common case, and it is worth confirming before assuming you have a project.

What is the Shopify checkout deadline for non-Plus stores?

26 August 2026. On that date script tags stop working on the Thank you and Order status pages for stores not on the Plus plan, per Shopify's developer documentation. Additional scripts on those pages were already sunset on 28 August 2025. Plus stores hit their equivalent deadline on 28 August 2025, so if you are on Plus this has already happened to you. The deadline covers post-purchase pages specifically. The Information, Shipping and Payment steps moved off checkout.liquid earlier and are not part of this particular date.

Will Shopify migrate my customisations automatically?

Do not count on it. Shopify's Plus upgrade guide documents automatic upgrades beginning January 2026 for Plus stores that had not migrated, with 30 days of email notice, and states that legacy page customisations are lost in that process. Note what that means: even the automatic path for Plus removes customisations rather than rebuilding them. Shopify's non-Plus guidance directs merchants to upgrade manually and does not describe the same managed process. Either way, an automatic upgrade is a cleanup, not a migration. Nobody rebuilds your conversion tracking for you, and no automated process knows which of your scripts mattered.

Does this break my checkout or only my tracking?

Only the customisation and tracking layer on the post-purchase pages. Checkout continues processing payments and creating orders normally, which is precisely why this deadline is dangerous. A broken checkout generates immediate complaints and gets fixed within hours. Broken attribution generates no complaints at all. It produces a gradual, unexplained decline in reported conversions that looks like a marketing problem, and teams often respond by cutting spend on campaigns that were performing perfectly well. The commercial damage comes from the decisions made on bad data, not from the outage itself.

What replaces additional scripts on the thank you page?

Three separate tools, depending on what the script did. Web Pixels handle analytics and conversion tracking, configured under customer events rather than pasted into a template. Checkout UI extensions handle visual changes and content blocks on the post-purchase pages, built as app extensions and placed through the checkout and accounts editor. Shopify Functions handle backend logic for discounts, shipping and payment, which is also where Shopify Scripts logic now belongs. The important shift is architectural: instead of injecting arbitrary JavaScript into a page Shopify renders, you register extensions at defined points. It is more restrictive, and it is why checkout stopped being a place where a stray third-party script could slow down or break payment for everyone.

How long does a checkout migration actually take?

It depends almost entirely on what is in that Additional Scripts field, which is why the inventory step comes first. A store with standard ad platform pixels and nothing custom is usually a single afternoon, because the supported apps do the work. A store with custom post-purchase logic, a messaging integration and several app injections is typically one to three weeks of development plus testing against real orders. A store that also lost Scripts logic in June and has not rebuilt it is a larger project, because discount and shipping rules need rebuilding as Functions and properly tested before they touch live pricing. Nobody can size this for you without reading the field first.

How much does checkout migration cost in India in 2026?

For a straightforward pixel and tracking rebuild, most Indian stores are looking at Rs 15,000 to Rs 40,000 of agency time, and many can do it in house with the supported apps for nothing beyond a few hours. Custom post-purchase functionality rebuilt as checkout UI extensions typically runs Rs 60,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh depending on complexity. Rebuilding lost Scripts logic as Shopify Functions is usually Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh, since discount and shipping rules need careful testing before going live. The cost worth weighing is not the migration. It is a quarter of ad spend allocated on attribution data that quietly stopped being accurate.

Get your checkout deadline audit

Free checkout audit. Email hello@exactwhy.com with subject "Checkout deadline" and paste the contents of your Additional Scripts field, with any keys or tokens removed. We respond within 4 hours telling you which items are revenue-critical, which are already dead, and roughly what the rebuild involves. If the answer is that you can handle it yourself in an afternoon, we will say so.

Paid migration (Rs 15,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh). We inventory the field, rebuild tracking as Web Pixels, move order confirmation into Flow or your messaging app, rebuild custom post-purchase functionality as checkout UI extensions, and verify everything against real test orders before clearing the legacy field.

Scripts recovery. If discount or shipping logic stopped applying on 1 July and has not been rebuilt, we port it to Shopify Functions and test it against your live pricing rules.

For related work on what happens after checkout, our CRO audit findings cover the conversion fixes we see most often. The deadline itself is mundane. The expensive part is finding out in October that your attribution stopped working in August, and that every budget decision since then was made on numbers that were not real.
