Shop Pay in India 2026 (What Actually Works for Indian Merchants)
Shop Pay reached India in stages between 2024 and 2026. By mid-2026 it is available to most Indian Shopify merchants and integrates with UPI, cards, and netbanking. Most merchants still underestimate the conversion lift it delivers. This is the honest picture of what Shop Pay does for Indian brands in 2026, what the mobile lift actually looks like, and where it works better than Razorpay or Cashfree.
What Shop Pay is in India in 2026
Shop Pay is Shopify's native accelerated checkout. Customers save their payment methods and shipping addresses once and check out with a single tap on any Shop Pay-enabled store. In India, Shop Pay now supports UPI, credit and debit cards, netbanking, and Shop Pay Installments through partner banks.
The core value proposition: for returning customers, Shop Pay completes checkout in 2 to 4 seconds versus 30 to 90 seconds for standard checkout. On mobile, that difference is the single highest-impact checkout improvement most stores can make.
Shop Pay adoption on Indian Shopify stores in 2026
From our client observations across Indian Plus stores, Shop Pay adoption rates are climbing steadily but remain below what most merchants assume.
Store enablement. Roughly 60 to 70 percent of Indian Plus stores have Shop Pay enabled as of mid-2026. Most merchants who have not enabled it either use non-Shopify payment gateways (which reduces the Shop Pay benefit) or have not upgraded their checkout to include the Shop Pay button prominently.
Customer adoption. Once enabled, roughly 15 to 25 percent of Indian mobile customers use Shop Pay at checkout. This is materially lower than US adoption (35 to 45 percent) but climbing every quarter.
Repeat customer usage. For customers who have used Shop Pay once, repeat usage rate at the next checkout is 60 to 75 percent. Once customers experience one-tap checkout, they prefer it.
The mobile conversion lift on Indian carts
Shop Pay conversion lift depends heavily on where in your funnel you measure it.
Overall store conversion: stores that enable Shop Pay typically see 3 to 6 percent overall mobile conversion lift. Not huge in isolation but compounds across every mobile visitor.
Returning customer conversion: customers who complete checkout with Shop Pay have 20 to 35 percent higher checkout completion rates than customers using standard checkout. Massive gap.
Cart-to-order conversion for Shop Pay users: 55 to 70 percent versus 25 to 40 percent for non-Shop Pay users. This is the single highest checkout completion rate segment for most Indian stores.
The compounding effect makes Shop Pay the highest-ROI single checkout decision available to Indian merchants in 2026.
How Shop Pay compares to Razorpay for Indian merchants
They are not direct competitors. Shop Pay is an accelerated checkout layer. Razorpay is a payment gateway. Most Indian Shopify stores run both.
The interaction pattern. Razorpay processes the actual payment. Shop Pay speeds up the pre-payment checkout flow. When a customer taps the Shop Pay button, Shop Pay handles address, payment method selection, and confirmation. Razorpay or Shopify Payments processes the payment based on the customer's saved method.
Stores that use Shopify Payments as their processor get the tightest Shop Pay integration. Stores that use Razorpay or Cashfree still benefit from Shop Pay's speed but with slightly less tight integration at the payment step. Our earlier payment gateway comparison covers the processor decision in depth.
Setting up Shop Pay correctly on an Indian store
Enabling Shop Pay is a settings change in the Shopify admin. Making it work well requires three additional steps.
Add Shop Pay button prominently on product pages. Do not hide the Shop Pay button below the fold or in the cart drawer only. Product page placement drives the highest Shop Pay adoption.
Enable Shop Pay for cart drawer checkout. Some themes require explicit configuration to show Shop Pay in the cart drawer. Confirm your theme setup.
Test with your primary payment methods. Confirm Shop Pay works correctly with UPI, cards, and any other payment methods your store accepts. Cross-check on iOS Safari and Android Chrome.
The Shop Pay Installments question in India
Shop Pay Installments (buy now pay later at checkout) is Shopify's answer to Klarna, Afterpay, and similar BNPL services. In India, Shop Pay Installments launched in partnership with select banks and is available for eligible product categories.
The pattern that works in India. High-value carts (above Rs 3000) see meaningfully higher conversion when Shop Pay Installments is available at checkout. Low-value carts see minimal difference. If your average order value is above Rs 3000, enabling Installments typically lifts conversion 3 to 8 percent. If AOV is below Rs 1500, the impact is negligible.
What is Shop Pay and how does it work on Shopify stores in India?
Shop Pay is Shopify's accelerated checkout system that lets customers save their payment methods and shipping addresses once and check out with a single tap on any Shop Pay-enabled store. When a customer visits an Indian Shopify store with Shop Pay enabled, they see a Shop Pay button alongside the standard checkout. Tapping it triggers a fast checkout flow using saved details, completing in 2 to 4 seconds versus 30 to 90 seconds for standard checkout. Shop Pay in India supports UPI, credit and debit cards, netbanking, and Shop Pay Installments through partner banks. The system works across every Shop Pay-enabled Shopify store, creating a network effect where each new store benefits from customers who have saved details on other stores.
Does Shop Pay work with UPI in India in 2026?
Yes. Shop Pay in India integrates natively with UPI as of 2026. Customers who set up Shop Pay in India can save their UPI VPA (Virtual Payment Address) and complete checkout using UPI without re-entering details. UPI AutoPay integration is also supported for subscription and recurring payment scenarios. The UPI integration has been maturing since 2024 rollout and now handles UPI intent flows, UPI collect flows, and UPI AutoPay. For Indian brands where UPI is 60 to 70 percent of payment volume, Shop Pay UPI support is what makes the accelerated checkout viable for the majority of customers.
Should I enable Shop Pay if I use Razorpay as my payment gateway?
Yes. Shop Pay and Razorpay work together, not against each other. Shop Pay handles the accelerated checkout UX. Razorpay processes the payment. Stores using Razorpay still get the conversion lift from Shop Pay for customers who use the accelerated flow. The integration is slightly less tight than Shopify Payments plus Shop Pay, but still delivers meaningful mobile conversion improvements. Most Indian Plus stores running Razorpay also enable Shop Pay for exactly this reason. The setup takes under an hour. The upside is a 3 to 6 percent overall mobile conversion lift. The downside is essentially none.
How much does Shop Pay cost for Indian Shopify merchants?
Shop Pay itself is free for all Shopify merchants. There is no additional fee for enabling Shop Pay or for customers using Shop Pay at checkout. The costs come from the underlying payment processing which is separate. If you use Shopify Payments as your processor, standard Shopify Payments rates apply. If you use Razorpay or Cashfree, their standard rates apply plus Shopify's 0.15 percent transaction fee. Shop Pay Installments has its own cost structure with fees paid by the merchant to the installment provider, typically 3 to 6 percent per Installments transaction. For merchants weighing whether the Installments fees are worth the conversion lift, the math usually works for AOVs above Rs 3000.
What is the conversion lift from Shop Pay on Indian mobile carts?
The measurable conversion lift from Shop Pay on Indian mobile carts depends on segment. For overall store conversion, enabling Shop Pay typically lifts mobile conversion 3 to 6 percent. For returning customers specifically, Shop Pay users have 20 to 35 percent higher checkout completion rates than non-Shop Pay users. For the cart-to-order conversion rate specifically, Shop Pay users convert at 55 to 70 percent versus 25 to 40 percent for non-Shop Pay users. The largest gains come from returning customer segments where the customer has already saved details and completing checkout is a single tap. New customer gains are smaller because the first Shop Pay setup adds friction that offsets some of the speed benefit.
Can I disable Shop Pay and use only my regular checkout?
Technically yes, but not recommended for most Indian Shopify stores in 2026. Disabling Shop Pay removes an option that delivers materially higher conversion for the customers who use it. The reasons a merchant might disable Shop Pay: brand-specific concerns about payment consistency, incompatibility with a specific custom checkout flow, or regional restrictions. For 90 percent of Indian Shopify merchants, disabling Shop Pay is leaving conversion on the table. The exceptions are stores with unusual checkout customization needs that Shop Pay does not support cleanly. Test carefully before disabling. Once Shop Pay is off, the customers who prefer it are more likely to abandon your cart in favor of a store that offers it.
What we recommend for Indian Shopify merchants on Shop Pay
Three actions to take this week.
Action 1: Confirm Shop Pay is enabled on your store. If not, enable it in Shopify admin and confirm the Shop Pay button appears on product pages and in the cart drawer.
Action 2: Test Shop Pay checkout on your store using a real UPI VPA and a real card. Confirm the flow works end-to-end. Some themes need custom code adjustments to display Shop Pay prominently.
Action 3: If your average order value is above Rs 3000, enable Shop Pay Installments. Test the flow with a real order. The conversion lift on high-AOV carts typically justifies the Installments fees.
