Getting Stores Ready for Claude Commerce Agents

Claude Commerce Agents launched on 2 September 2026. Anthropic's blueprint works with Shopify's product feed, customer identity system, and checkout stack to let AI agents find products, recommend them, and complete sales without leaving the chat window. Before any of that works for your store, four things have to be in place: Shopify Catalog eligibility, product data that agents can parse, real-time inventory that does not lie, and an understanding of which features are available in your market.

This is not a guide to what Claude agents do or how they work. That ground is covered in our Catalog explainer and guide to agentic default settings. This is what your store needs to be ready for them to find you, list you, and sell your products at scale.

Three-step Claude Commerce Agent readiness process: data audit, catalog setup, agent testing
Your store readiness path before Claude agents can find and sell your products

What has to be true before agents can even see your products?

Claude Commerce Agents search stores through Shopify Catalog, which is the structured product feed that ships with Shopify as of the Spring 2026 Edition. Catalog is not automatic. Your store has to be eligible, and eligibility is a three-part gate:

Store eligibility. You need a Starter plan or higher (not private mode). Your store must comply with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy. Most stores pass this part without knowing it was a gate.

Account standing. Shopify's Catalog requirements ask you to verify your email address, turn on two step authentication, keep a genuine sales history with real customers, fulfil orders promptly and accurately, keep chargeback rates low, and pay Shopify invoices on time. If you have run a legitimate store for more than a month, you almost certainly qualify.

Product eligibility. Each product needs a title, at least one image, and a price greater than zero. It must be published to your online store (Hydrogen or Headless channels work too). Products cannot be unlisted, hidden from search, or contain sensitive content. It sounds permissive because it is. The real gate sits in the data quality check that comes next.

If your store clears those three tests, your products appear in Shopify Catalog by default. From there, Claude agents (and the other major shopping agents) can search them. You do not have to opt in. If you qualify, you are already listed.

What exactly do agents need from your product data?

A human browsing your store gets photos, a description, reviews, recommendations and a size guide. An agent looking at your Catalog entry gets structured data. The difference between a product the agent recommends and one the agent skips is the quality and completeness of that data.

Shopify's documentation on agentic-ready product data outlines four standards. Your data must be machine-parsable: structured so that systems can query it without human interpretation. A description that reads well to humans can be vague to software. An agent seeing "premium material" stops. An agent seeing "100 percent cotton, brushed finish" can reason about it and compare it.

Your data must be current. Pricing and inventory accuracy are measured at the moment the agent asks, not the last time a crawler visited your site. If your inventory system updates every 24 hours but an agent queries it every minute, agents will place orders for out-of-stock products and you will fail them. Real-time sync is not optional anymore.

Your data must be completely attributed. Agents use attributes like material, color, size, age group, and intended use to filter and compare. A product with sparse attributes gets filtered out before comparison happens. If you sell a mens winter jacket but your Catalog entry has no color, size, or material listed, agents looking for "blue insulated jacket size M" will not see it, even if you have exactly that product in stock.

Your data must use literal language instead of marketing copy. A storefront description might say our jacket is "engineered for mountain expeditions and urban commutes alike, where every thread tells a story." An agent reads that and learns nothing. The same jacket described as "men's insulated winter jacket, 650 fill goose down, blue nylon shell, sizes XS to XXL, water resistant" teaches the agent enough to make a recommendation.

Regional capability matrix showing Claude Agents feature availability for US vs India merchants
India merchants can use Claude agents via API and blueprints, but Shop sign-in and Shopify Payments are unavailable

Do you need Shopify Payments to use Claude agents?

Not for agents to find you or list you. Catalog access requires no payment processor at all. But Claude agents do need checkout to complete sales, and checkout on Claude uses Shopify's native direct checkout, which means the customer is buying from your store without visiting your site. That checkout experience is tied to your payment setup.

Here is where India merchants hit the wall: Shopify Payments is not available in India. As of September 2026, India remains unsupported by Shopify Payments, even for businesses that sell globally and want to take payments in USD or EUR. Shopify's own requirements for the Shop channel state that a store must have Shopify Payments activated, so Shop sign-in is not an option for a store in India.

What that actually means for Claude agents: the agent can still find your products, list them, and send customers your way. But the direct checkout that happens inside the agent (the transaction where the customer never leaves Claude) requires either Shopify Payments or a third-party payment provider that supports agent checkout. For Indian merchants using Razorpay, Cashfree or another provider, the practical route is the agent building a cart and handing the shopper to your own checkout. The agent can build a cart and pass it to your checkout. It just goes through your website checkout flow, not an in-app agent checkout.

This is not a blocker. It is a difference. US merchants get in-app direct checkout. Indian merchants get cart redirect. Both generate the same order and the same revenue. The customer experience differs, and the attribution is different, but the sale is real.

What about Shop sign-in and customer recognition?

Shop sign-in is Shopify's unified customer identity layer. A customer who signs into Shop once can sign into any Shop-enabled merchant and checkout without re-entering details. For repeat purchase businesses this is powerful. For agents, it means the agent can see that a returning customer is signing in and can surface their prior purchases, saved preferences, and order history inside the chat.

Shopify lists Shopify Payments as a requirement for the Shop channel. Since Shopify Payments is not available in India, Shop sign-in is not available for Indian merchants either.

The workaround exists. Shopify's customer API still works, so Claude agents can retrieve customer data through the API and use it to personalize recommendations inside the agent. The customer does not sign into Shop. Instead, the agent authenticates with your store through the standard Shopify API and retrieves the customer profile. It works. It is not as frictionless as Shop sign-in, but Indian merchants can still provide agent-assisted repeat purchase experiences.

What is actually available to Indian merchants right now?

Shopify Catalog for India is live. The products that qualify in Catalog are visible to Claude agents and other shopping agents. Your store can receive agent-referred traffic today. The limitations are payment and checkout. If you use Razorpay or Cashfree, your checkout flow works fine. The agent sends a cart, the customer completes the purchase on your site. You process the payment with your existing provider. No direct checkout inside the agent, but the conversion path exists and works.

For authentication, you can still use Shopify's standard customer API to pull order history and preferences if you want agents to recognize returning customers. Most Indian merchants do not have the technical capacity to wire that up themselves. For merchants who want that level of integration, the Claude Commerce Agents blueprint is open source on GitHub. You can hire a developer to build it, or you can work with a Shopify Partner who specializes in agent integrations. ExactWhy works with Indian merchants on exactly this setup.

The honest truth: Indian merchants are not locked out of Claude agents. We are playing a slightly different game. We get Catalog discovery, agent recommendations, and a working checkout flow. We do not get Shop sign-in or direct in-app checkout. The merchants who win here are the ones who optimize for product data and checkout speed, not the ones waiting for Shopify to add Payments support.

What is the readiness checklist before agents can sell for you?

Seven things, in order. None of them require a developer if you do not want one. All of them move the needle on agent discoverability.

1. Verify Catalog eligibility (this week). Log into your Shopify admin. Go to Settings, then Apps and Integrations, then Catalog. If you see Catalog listed, write down your status. If it says "eligible but not yet enabled," click Enable. If it says you are not eligible, read the reason. Most reasons are fixable (missing policies, account standing issue, data quality).

2. Check your published policies (this week). Three policies are required: Privacy Policy, Refund/Return Policy, and Terms of Service. Go to Settings, then Policies. If any are missing, write them now. Templates exist. Do not overthink this. Shopify has a policy generator. Use it.

3. Map your products to the Shopify Standard Product Taxonomy (week 1). Open your product CSV (Products > Export Products). The taxonomy mapping is a single column that Shopify will read. Most product titles map automatically, but check the mapping for accuracy, especially for complex products. If you have 1,000 products, spend three hours spot-checking the mapped categories. If you have 10,000, hire someone to validate the sample and fix outliers. Upload the corrected CSV back into Shopify.

4. Complete your product attributes (week 1). Color, material, size, intended use, age group, gender. Add these to your product metafields or use the standard attributes Shopify provides. If you have a CSV, add columns for each attribute and bulk upload. If you use the admin, do this by category, not product-by-product. A category of 200 jackets all need color, material, and size. Set this up once and apply it to the whole category.

5. Audit and rewrite product descriptions for agents (week 2). Your storefront descriptions are for humans. Agents need structured, attribute-rich, literal descriptions. Take your top 20 products by traffic and rewrite the descriptions. Put your test rewrites into Shopify and search them with Claude or ChatGPT to see if the agent understands the product correctly. Once you have the pattern down, apply it to the rest of your catalog. Budget two to three hours per 100 products for this work.

6. Verify real-time inventory sync (week 2). If your inventory lives in an external system (a warehouse management tool, a fulfillment partner's API), confirm that updates to Shopify happen in real time or at worst within 15 minutes. An agent that sells out-of-stock products wastes customer time and damages trust. Test by placing a test order on the agent, having it go to your system, and confirming that Shopify inventory updates before the agent can accept another order for that product.

7. Set up agent traffic segmentation in analytics (week 3). Agent-referred orders look different from human traffic in your analytics. They have no session, no bounce rate, no referrer. If you use Google Analytics, create a segment for agent traffic by filtering for "source: Shopify" and "medium: agent-checkout" (the exact values depend on your setup). Track conversion rate, average order value, and return rate separately for agent traffic. This data guides your next steps.

What should you actually do this month?

Free readiness review. Email hello@exactwhy.com with subject "Claude agents readiness" and send us three things: your store URL, your current average order value, and which of the seven steps above you have already completed. We respond within 4 hours with what needs to move this month and what can wait.

Data quality audit and agent testing. We audit your Catalog eligibility, product taxonomy, attributes, descriptions, and real-time inventory. We then run a complete test of agent discoverability: we query your products through Claude, see what agents see, and identify gaps. Usually this surfaces 10 to 20 specific products that need rewrites or attribute fixes. We prioritize by traffic and by agent recommendation likelihood.

Ongoing agent commerce optimization. Once you are live in Catalog and taking agent-referred orders, we track agent performance separately from your other traffic, identify which product categories agents are recommending most, and help you optimize descriptions and attributes for the categories where agents send the most volume. The difference between a store that treats agent traffic as a novelty and one that optimizes for it is usually 3 to 5x in agent-referred revenue within a quarter.

Claude Commerce Agents shipped on 2 September 2026. Most Indian merchants have not yet opened the Catalog section of their admin. By October 15, the merchants who will win this channel will be running full agent tests. The ones who wait until November will catch the tail end.

Check your Catalog status this week. Most stores are already eligible and do not know it.
