What Balmain on Shopify Means for Indian Brands

Balmain, the Paris fashion house founded in 1945, now runs balmain.com on Shopify. Shopify president Harley Finkelstein announced it in a post that called the speed and precision of a rebuild at that size almost unheard of. We checked the site ourselves on 23 September 2026 and it is served by Shopify, with visitors from India sent to a regional storefront.

That is worth a moment for anyone in India still being told that Shopify is fine for small brands but not for serious ones. This post looks at what the move actually signals, and what a founder here should take from it.

What did Shopify actually announce about Balmain?

In his post on LinkedIn, Finkelstein wrote that Balmain.com is on Shopify as of that day, that for a full digital rebuild of a house this size the speed and precision were almost unheard of, and that the complexity of international payments, duties, order management and logistics now gets handled in the background so the maison can focus on design and craft.

Two things are worth separating there. The first is a fact: the site runs on Shopify. The second is a claim about speed, made by the platform's own president, so treat it as the vendor's framing rather than an independent audit. What we can verify from outside is the outcome, not the internal timeline.

The agency that rebuilt it made a related point publicly: a project of this size is never one clever piece of engineering, and what carried it was a brand that knew what it wanted, leadership that held the line on scope and timing, and a team that stayed precise from architecture to go live.

That is the part Indian founders should underline. Scope discipline, not a secret technique.

What makes a Shopify replatform fast: a decided brand, held scope, clean product data, standard platform behaviour, one accountable team
None of these are technical. Timelines are usually decided by decisions, not by code.

Why does a luxury house moving to Shopify matter in India?

Because the objection it removes is one we still hear in sales conversations. Brands with a large catalogue, several countries, duties, and a specific visual identity are often told that only a heavier enterprise platform can carry them, usually by someone selling that platform.

A house like Balmain running on the same platform as a new D2C brand in Surat does not mean the two stores are the same. It means the ceiling is higher than most Indian founders have been told. The practical questions change from "can this platform handle us" to "what do we want to spend our custom development on".

If you are weighing that decision, our guides to moving from Shopify to Shopify Plus and to UX for luxury fashion brands cover the two halves of it: the platform tier, and the design standard your category expects.

What did the platform handle that a brand used to build?

Finkelstein's list is the interesting part: international payments, duties, order management and logistics, all handled in the background. Those are the four areas where cross-border stores used to spend a large share of their development budget.

For an Indian brand selling abroad, the equivalent questions are the same ones: which currency a shopper sees, whether duties are collected at checkout or billed later, where the order goes for fulfilment, and which carrier picks it up. Shopify's Markets documentation is where to check what the platform does for you today, and what still needs an app or a custom build. It is also why balmain.com sends an Indian visitor to a regional storefront rather than one global page.

We have written separately about selling internationally with Shopify Markets, which goes through those decisions for smaller catalogues.

So what actually makes a replatform fast?

Not the platform on its own. In our experience the timeline is decided before any code is written, by five things:

  1. A brand that has decided. If the visual direction is still being argued over, the build waits. The fastest projects begin with a settled design.
  2. Scope that is held. Every migration produces a list of extras. Teams that move them to phase two ship on time. Teams that add them keep moving the date.
  3. Product data that is ready. Clean products, variants, prices, images and copy. Data cleanup is the most underestimated part of any migration.
  4. Willingness to use the platform's own behaviour. Custom checkout logic, custom cart rules and custom pricing engines are where months disappear.
  5. One accountable team. Design, build and launch owned end to end, rather than split across vendors who each wait for the other.

When a migration slips, the reason is almost never the platform. It is a decision nobody made, or data nobody cleaned.

Shopify replatforming split: products, customers, orders and URLs move as data while theme, checkout logic and integrations are rebuilt
Data moves. Behaviour gets rebuilt. Migration quotes that ignore the second column are the ones that slip.

What moves across in a migration, and what gets rebuilt?

This distinction decides your budget, and it is the one most migration quotes blur.

Moves as data. Products and variants, customers, order history, and your URL structure as a redirect map. This work is mechanical. It needs care, especially with variants and with redirects, but it is predictable.

Gets rebuilt. The theme and design, any custom checkout or cart behaviour, and every integration. Your old platform's templates do not transfer. Neither does custom code written for it.

Redirects deserve their own line. A migration that does not map old URLs to new ones loses the search rankings the brand spent years earning, and no amount of design makes up for that. Our Magento to Shopify migration guide covers how we approach that mapping.

Does this mean every Indian brand should replatform?

No. Replatform when the platform is the problem. Stay when it is not.

Signs the platform is the problem: your team cannot launch a campaign page without a developer, your checkout cannot support how India actually pays, your hosting bill grows faster than your revenue, your agency spends more time maintaining the system than improving the store, or the vendor has announced an end of support date.

Signs the platform is not the problem: your traffic does not convert, your product pages do not answer buyer questions, your ads are expensive, or your returns are eating margin. Those follow you to any new platform. A migration that was really a conversion problem in disguise is an expensive way to learn that.

What should a founder ask an agency about a migration?

Five questions, and the answers tell you more than a portfolio does:

  • What moves as data, and what are you rebuilding? A clear split, in writing, before the quote.
  • Who owns the redirect map? Ask to see an example from a previous migration.
  • What happens to our integrations? Each one named, with a plan, including the ERP or accounting system.
  • What is phase two? A team that has already parked some features for later is a team planning to launch on time.
  • Who is accountable for the launch date? One name, not a committee.

If the answers are vague, the timeline is vague, whatever the proposal says.

How long does a Shopify migration take for an Indian D2C brand?

It depends on three things, and none of them is the platform: how many products you have and how clean that data is, how much custom behaviour your current store depends on, and how many systems connect to it.

A brand with a few hundred products, standard checkout needs and two or three integrations is a different job from one with thousands of variants, B2B pricing, an ERP connection and a warehouse system. The first is a matter of weeks of focused work. The second is a project with phases, and anyone quoting it as a fixed number of days without seeing the data has not looked properly.

What consistently makes it longer than planned:

  • Product data that nobody owns. Sizes written five different ways, missing images, prices that disagree with the accounting system.
  • Integrations discovered late. The invoicing tool or courier connection nobody mentioned until launch week.
  • Design decisions reopened mid build. Every reopened decision costs more the later it happens.
  • Content that has to be rewritten. Old product descriptions that were never good enough, noticed only when they are moved.

What should you do in the first month after migrating?

Watch the numbers that tell you whether the move worked, rather than admiring the new design.

  1. Search traffic on your top pages. Compare against the same pages before the move. A drop usually points at redirects.
  2. Checkout completion. Your payment setup is new. Test every method, including cash on delivery rules if you offer it.
  3. Errors in Search Console. Crawl errors after a migration are normal in small numbers and a problem in large ones.
  4. Orders flowing into every connected system. Place real test orders and follow them into your ERP, courier and accounting tools.
  5. Page speed on a mid range Android phone. Not on your own laptop.

Fix what the first month shows you before starting the phase two feature list. A migration is not finished on launch day, it is finished when the numbers are back where they were and moving up.

Is Shopify enough for a premium brand in India?

For most premium Indian brands, the honest answer is yes, and the real constraints are elsewhere. Photography, product storytelling, delivery experience and packaging shape how premium a brand feels far more than the platform underneath does. A house like Balmain running on Shopify settles the platform argument. It does not settle whether your store looks and feels like a brand worth the price you are asking.

That is where we spend most of our time with clients: the parts a shopper can actually see.

Get in touch or email hello@exactwhy.com with the subject "Migration review", and tell us what your store runs on today, roughly how many products you have, and what you want to fix. We reply within 4 hours with what would move as data, what would need rebuilding, and whether we think you should migrate at all.

Migration planning. If it makes sense to move, we start with a written plan covering data, redirects, integrations and a launch date, with the extras parked in phase two, before any build work begins.
